In 2008, the Hawaii Legislature required that all notary acknowledgments also include a notary certification. As a result, in addition to the standard notary acknowledgment, the notary must include a certification that contains:
- The date of notarization and signature of the notary,
- The printed name and seal of the notary public,
- The identification of the jurisdiction,
- A description of the document, and
- A statement on the number of pages and the date of the document.
Although the Hawaii statute as drafted implies you’re supposed to have a separate acknowledgment and a separate certificate, the Department of the Attorney General has issued a statement that both can be combined. To be conservative, it’s better to use a separate notary certificate which would simply follow the notary acknowledgment.
